How I Use It
I used Minecraft: Education Edition in collaboration with the 5th Grade Teachers at my school to take Social Studies and the study of early settlers to another level. I put the students in an environment where they had to build the Jamestown Settlement and survive until winter working together in a small group. Did they get the settlement constructed before winter to survive? This activity encouraged students to realize things were different and much was required to be successful. Students who are not interested in History nor Social Studies gained a new appreciation for the subjects because of the immersive nature.
My Take
I have been using Minecraft Edu for many years in the classroom, and I have to say the new version is excellent and is getting better all the time as the people at Microsoft and Minecraft work to make elements of the Education Edition more vibrant and more pertinent to what students are learning in school today. For example, now there is Code Connection where you can code in the game, and the Chemistry update has just taken learning Chemistry to a whole new place. We are teaching a generation of connected students, and they often will learn better and be more engaged in an immersive environment. Is it necessary for all subjects? No. But having it as a tool to enhance learning is something valuable and should be used making education as fun and engaging as possible.
