How I Use It
I loved using this program with my kindergarteners because it uses visual and kinesthetic tasks, as well as the typical written numerals we are all used to to teach math concepts. I also appreciate that the younger students are motivated to complete math work through social stories of helping the different characters solve a problem. My biggest issues was convincing my principal that they weren't just "playing", and getting the older students to stop trying to write things down and to practice the mental math skills that Dreambox is teaching.
My Take
Because of the awesome graphics and unique way of teaching math, some dismiss the program as simplistic or easy. I have found that it is great a teaching students to think critically about math, not just to memorize steps and facts. This is especially important for those students who are struggling with learning math in the typical numeral-based curriculum and students who are building their language skills (early childhood and ELL). The one thing that is difficult is that it does not have an andriod app. Not all of my student have an iPad, but may have other kinds of tablets at home.
