How I Use It
I use VocabularySpellingCity.com (VSC) as an activity at my literacy center and to strengthen my students spelling. I used to have the free membership, but recently upgraded to the premium membership. This membership allows me to create individual usernames and passwords for each student. The children can log in at school or at home to access interactive games and activities. At the beginning of the week my students receive new word lists. I like how I am able to create and customize each child's word list. The program is great for differentiated instruction since I am able to meet all of my learners , including English Language Learners. Students are able to spend time on vocabulary activities, phonic activities, and writing activities during the week. VSC's teacher page allows me to monitor their engagement which helps for those students who tend to get off task. At the end of the week, each child will take their final spelling test. I have headphones available because the kids will hear the dictated word they need to spell. This option also allows the children to hear a sentence with the word in it prior to them spelling it. This program is a huge time saver because spelling tests are automatically graded and recorded for me! VocabularySpellingCity.com has engaged all of my students --even my hard to reach ones!
My Take
My students and I loved the benefits that we received from the free site, but the upgraded site allows you to do much more! Not only are the games better for children (they have a larger variety to choose from), the tracking and data recording is great for teachers! The set up is quick to join. Once teachers create an account, they are able to assign word lists to students. What I like is that you can assign different children different word lists. Teachers don't have to worry about spending time creating list either! There are thousands of premade word lists already uploaded in the Teacher Resource section. Teachers can simply assign words that are currently learning in other subjects (science, math, history, etc...) to sight word lists and more! If they want to make their own word list, that is simple to do as well! Students will log in with their username and password to view their word list. Then, they are able to choose vocabulary activities, phonic activities, and/or writing activities, which essentially prepare them for their end of week test. Once they take their test, it will provide them with immediate feedback, including any words they might have misspelled. Teachers will love how they can access a detailed report of student engagement, scores, and words that each child needs more practice with. This will save teachers a lot of time since they won't have to grade all of the kids work. VocabularySpellingCity.com is something that my students really enjoy! They don't realize how much they're learning. This program streamlines instruction and truly brings words to life!
