How I Use It
I have used SpellingCity for approximately eight years. I uploaded sixth grade spelling lists (general and challenge lists) for our sixth grade team so the entire sixth grade class has access to the all lists. Teachers include the weekly spelling link on their teacher site for students to practice online. In the learning center, students use SpellingCity to practice and retake spelling tests (great for when students are absent, called out of class, failed to meet proficiency, etc.) when necessary, and email their scores to their teachers. It has proven to be a very useful tool (just imagine having 20 students in the learning center and trying to give each an individual spelling makeup test) to ensure students can show their knowledge of weekly spelling (and vocabulary) lists. Super for whole class pretests as well - have fun!
I like how SpellingCity offers practice choice: how they want to practice spelling. I also like that SpellingCity allows teachers to enter their own definitions, as we know, sometimes multiple definitions can become challenging for students who are English learners or students with special needs. SpellingCity would be considered lower-level (Blooms).
