How I Use It
I implement a half and half classroom where half of the students work in a teacher led group while the opposite side of the class participate on computers. I use the "customer created" pathways to choose specific content objectives that the students can work on. I create a "buy in" for the students by allowing them to test out of lessons using the pre-quiz. The reports allow me to take grades that are easily accessible. I also use this for reteach/retest. When students do not show mastery of a skill, I have them move through a think through math pathway which provides remedial objectives based on the students' individual needs. It is a reteach that is specific to the student!
My Take
I think this product can be an asset to the classroom if used with fidelity. I used it in previous years when I was less educated on the product and students quickly began to loathe the website. Now that I have implemented the motivation aspects build in, competitive aspects, and allowed it as a tool for reteach that is specific to the content being taught in the classroom, it is a huge success that the kids look forward to using. The avatars became a huge distraction in keeping students on task, however, the program recently opened a setting where teachers have the option to restrict access for certain periods of time.
