Teacher Review for Think Through Math

The BEST resource I've used in intervention. Great models, visuals, AND supported by real time help.

How I Use It
My intervention kids use TTM 2-3 times weekly at school. Kids can log on at school or at home (it uses multiple platforms: computers, tablets, smart phones, even Wii's, and X-boxes) As long as you have an internet connection, this program is accessible. Their is a placement test at the beginning that determines the pathways most appropriate for the kids. I set up my options so my kids must pre-test before the lesson. My kids MUST use their math journals to record the pictures used in "guided learning" and I show them how they can use those same pictures to help them figure out problems on post-tests. Already (8 weeks into school) they are showing their work much more better and are better able to choose strategies and tools ("Can I use Base 10 blocks?" "Can I draw a number line?") when working problems away from the program. If you are not 1. setting goals, 2. offering feedback, and 3. actively monitoring usage though it is very easy for kids to "happy click" their way through and not learn much at all. I have a few that I've had to restart their pathways when they start doing that. But when the students see that you can print out reports that show pre AND post test results, time spent on each lesson, AND print certificates with their AMAZING avatars, they quickly want to do better. The print outs make great reports for me to share with teachers and parents as well. Faith M. - College Street Elementary - Lindale, Tx
My Take
This is one of the BEST teaching tools I've used in grades 3-5. It works with ALL of my intervention kids, including: dyslexics (there is an option to have text read aloud), ESL's (read aloud in Spanish), below-level students (the program automatically branches down when kids are struggling), and hard to motivate learners (the built in point system, class goals, and avatars are HIGHLY motivating.) I have seen a 3rd grader move from below-grade level to working on and understanding 6th grade level work in the span of 1.5 years. He went from struggling at the beginning of 3rd grade to making all A's (even into 4th and continuing in 5th grade.) The company is extremely responsive to technical issues, questions about all aspects of the program - last year they changed a WHOLE lesson in response to teacher feedback that it wasn't as aligned to a new TEK as it could have been. I've never seen a company do that so immediately. I usually have an answer within minutes of posting a query. New this year is a benchmarking option that use can do within 2 different windows (Dec-Jan and Mar-Apr) that my campus is planning on using to help track student progress toward the STAAR test. I have had students, parents, and teachers RAVE about the rigor, the rewards, the reports (are super easy to find and use) and the immediate response offered throughout the program. The only criticism I have is that I'd like to present the program as a workshop within my district and there is not a way (that I know of) to show faux reports that do not disclose actual real student data. ~Faith M. - College Street Elementary - Lindale, Tx
