How I Use It
I am a teacher, reviewing this product as a parent. My daughter was required to complete TTM in 4th grade and had to complete a few lessons a week. She was motivated by the competition of the class. Upon log in, the students are able to view the top 20 students based on awards they received and the numbers of lessons complete. Upon investigation of the product I found out that this is an adaptive program and will help students where needed. If a student gets an answer wrong, the program will provide the correct answer and explanation. I did notice that there are tools for students to use all the time, but there is no digital scratch pad. It seems as though the calculator is on all the time, but I was only able to view one lesson. If it is always on, I can see the kids using it without doing any math calculation on paper.
My Take
TTM is adaptive and requires the student to take a test to determine a starting point. It is definitely aligned to the common core and provides a practice environment for state testing. As a teacher I think it is a good tool for differentiated learning, allowing high students to move on and low ones to continue at their own level. I did not see the teacher dashboard so I cannot speak to reports or data collected. The students seem very motivated by the awards and badges. There are many programs that provide the same opportunity as TTM, some of which I think are better. One feature TTM provides that others don't is Live help from a teacher. This means a student is able to chat with a certified teacher (not his/her classroom teacher) to get help as needed. The teacher speaks to the child and the child types his/her responses and questions. TTM seems to engage children, provide feedback for the teacher and motivate children to continue to work at their own pace.
