How I Use It
I assign it to be used as a center in my math time and students are allowed to use it at home for extra credit. I tell them to use the movie every time they start again because it has simple explanations that help them remember the concepts. I allow my students to choose the skill they want to work on most of the time. I tell them to do things that they feel the least successful in and want to work on the most. My students have really had good results with this and have even come to me and asked me to assign something that they want to work on that I had not yet assigned. I find it to be a good review and great practice of skills. It is broken down into common core objectives so it is easy to match to the class's learning experiences. Extra practice is always important for students. One student started doing it at home for the extra credit and did every single assignment. He asked me to put more on it and added, "For some reason, math seems easier for me now." I had to laugh because I think his work on tenmarks had a lot to do with both his improved attitude towards math AND his improved success in math. One thing that I really like is that students can hear the word problems and questions read to them. That helps low readers who could succeed in math but struggle due to the need to read word problems. My students benefit from using it and enjoy the experience.
My Take
I just use the free version and I have been pleased with it and used it in my classroom for a number of years. I like the movies. They give basic explanations of the skills, which supplements what students learned in class. I always assign the maximum number of practice problems. Also, be sure the make the due date at the end of the school year or assignments will expire and have to be assigned again! I found the hints are not always great. For instance, on a question about perimeter, the first 2 hints tell what area is, and that is just confusing for my students!
