How I Use It
TED-Ed has been offering its lesson platform to teachers for quite a while now, but this specialized section in Social Studies makes finding the needed content a little simpler. Students seem to like the flexibility of watching the videos at their own pace which makes for a good way to personalize instruction. I've seen this tool used often in a flipped classroom environment, where students are assigned to watch the video at home, and they come to class ready and prepared to answer questions, engage in discussions, further explore, and create content with the instruction provided.
Depending on the level taught, some of the comments and reasoning in the Guided Discussion may be a little challenging of ESL students, or students that are academically low.
I really appreciate the fact that there are dozens of pre-made lessons, yet, I also appreciate the opportunity to customize and personalize lessons. I don't necessarily believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching lessons, and therefore welcome the opportunity to cater to students according to their own specific needs. TED-Ed lessons offer such degree of customization.
