How I Use It
I used Socrative to develop a close reading lesson in ReadyGen (RG). For each question I was able to upload a specific excerpt from the RG text collection. From there I typed in the question that referred to the section of text I inserted. Students were able to read a portion of the text and then answer the question/s based on that excerpt. The BYOD format did not take away from the academic conversation if anything I think it cultivated deeper text based conversations. Some groups worked slower but had better answers while others went faster but possibly needed more text evidence or clarity. At the end of the lesson students reviewed the responses and discussed which student answer was best supported. Ell's may need to be paired with a high literacy peer or have addition technology such as google translate or dragon dictate to fully participate.
The product worked great for close reading because students were able to work at their own pace. I like that each student group was allowed to talk and discuss each question as needed. Students loved the lesson and asked if they could continue it at home. One limitation is there isn't a way to have multiple quizzes at once unless you create 2 accounts.
