How I Use It
I use this product as a "Do Now" for class each day in conjunction with my "flipped" classroom model. Students watch videos at home and take an open note quiz at the start of class through the Socrative app on a tablet (1-to-1). The questions align to the content introduced (or reinforced) by the video. The questions I write do not necessarily require critical thinking (they are mostly multiple choice and true/false), but definitely help me assess what students know and understand (from homework - videos, articles, etc), and engage. If the majority of students really struggled or excelled at a particular question, this will inform my instruction. My students really like the simple routine of walking into science class and grabbing a tablet right away. My students seem to prefer using Socrative on the tablets more than on the laptops. My students have also opted to project the results of the quiz on the Promethean board, which creates a bit of healthy and engaging competition. I am able to upload images of my own students/class to embed in the quiz, which is also engaging for students. There is no option to upload video, and evaluating short response questions is tricky (for instantaneous assessment).
My Take
Socrative is a very quick and easy way to bring students into "learning mode" when used as a "Do Now". It is useful as a basic formative assessment tool, but is less useful for assessing critical thinking (DOK 3+). I would recommend Socrative as a responsive teaching tool, but not necessarily as a learning tool or for summative assessment (it is no different from say, building a test with multiple choice, true/false, and short response on Google Form).
