How I Use It
I use Socrative for pretesting/formative assessment with my advanced reading classes. I grappled with finding a way to gauge if students did or did not comprehend their reading from the previous evening. When our school district pushed data-driven instruction through formative assessments, I was going crazy with organizing mass amounts of exit tickets and quick comprehension checks for my students. Yes, I would give an assessment, but I struggled with the organization and using the data in a timely fashion. When I embraced the idea of formative assessments, I found that using Socrative allowed me to see in real time what my students retained and recalled. I would quickly download the spreadsheet and group students by using a very easy to read color coded chart. Socrative also allowed me to ask students for short answer responses and placed those answers into the spreadsheet as well. The formative assessments through the APP Socrative seemed to make my kids work harder- as they knew they were being grouped by their results of their formative assessment. I would not recommend using this to take a formal exam. The product has grown and has added many features since its 2014 partnership with Mastery Connect. However, the APP can glitch and will loop the student several times through the same question. Students became addicted to Socrative. If I didn't have one prepared for the day, the were disappointed. My one student stated, "I feel more prepared for the end of unit exam because I take these daily assessments for you."
As a teaching tool Socrative is hands down a great way to view your student's current level. I like the ease of the APP. However, students are not restricted to only using the APP. Socrative quizzes can also be taken through any web based URL. Students can log into your room without an account. You can now even customize your classroom number. On the teacher end, it does take a bit of time to create the test through your computer. Tests remain in your test bank, and you can also share the test code with a colleague so they can access the test for their students. You have certain timed controls on the test features which allow students to go back to questions. Before you release the test, you should do a test run and make sure it looks the way you want it to. Socrative is outstanding for data-driven formative assessments in a neat and organized style.
