How I Use It
I use Socrative on at least a weekly basis in my classroom. Socrative allows you to create and upload tests into their system, and it stores those tests for you indefinitely. Although creating and uploading the test can be time consuming, the ability to retain all of my past tests on a server is invaluable. I log in to my teacher account and begin the test. I am able to choose options such as student paced or teacher paced. Additionally, I can choose to randomize the question order and the answer order. Students log in through their smart phones or a computer in the lab and take the test by entering my room name (you are able to choose this yourself - in our school, we have a standard one that I set up so that it is easy for the students to keep track). As students take the test, I can view their progress from my screen, and this enables me to ensure that they are making adequate progress. Although I usually use Socrative for multiple choice tests, I have also used their short answer options, and this allows me to address more Common Core requirements.
When I do not want to do a whole class test, I can use the "Space Race" feature, which allows me to give a quick quiz and display the results on the projector. In this option, students log in and are then assigned a color. On the screen, they see how well their team color is doing, and this is quite engaging for students!
Other features to Socrative include the ability to tag standards for each question as well as the option to provide feedback. Whether students answer a question correctly or incorrectly, they are provided with the right answer, and if you have feedback available on a question, they are also given the feedback. This is a great way of explaining to students in an immediate manner what they did right or wrong on a question.
Overall, I love Socrative and use it frequently in my classroom. The original version was not quite as user-friendly as Socrative 2.0 is. The updates included have really pushed Socrative from a good app to a great one!
