How I Use It
The best part about Socrative is its ease of use, especially after the latest update. It's easy to use for discussion questions, informal assessment, exit tickets, review games, and for a simple read of student opinion. I use it to facilitate discussions on reading assignments through the teacher-paced quiz format. Students find it engaging and enjoy the format. Many of my colleagues started using this tool after I introduced them to it a few years ago, and so many of us continue to use it as a part of our natural classroom routine that students have our Socrative room numbers memorized. I've used lots and lots of tools over the past six years, but this is one I keep coming back to and use consistently in my classroom. I didn't use it much during the second half of this last school year because the service was glitchy and I ran into frequent issues, but beta.socrative.com addressed the problems. I've been extremely happy with update and have yet to run into issues using it.
My Take
Socrative is a powerful tool that can transform classroom instruction and student learning in a 1:1 classroom. The new update is impressive. When you attach an image to a question, the picture dominates the screen, creating an excellent opportunity for discussion (and retention!). The instant-feedback has been dramatically improved on the teacher and the student end of the app. My students love seeing the percentage of correct answers on multiple choice questions, and I love the new visual element to this.
