How I Use It
I use Scratch with students in grades 2-5. Our activities range from drawing polygons, to creating presentations about animal habitats or interviews with famous historical figures. Students learn from my modeling and the step by step tutorials. Scratch is an engaging platform for student projects. Students do need to set up a free account. An email is required for password recovery, so a teacher email will work if needed. Students select from a library of characters, objects and backgrounds. They can also import photographs and images. Friendly editing tools are provided to customize the appearance.
My Take
Students can use coding to create almost anything, including their own video games. Differentiation is easily built in by varying the complexity of the program scripts that users build by dragging and snapping together blocks which command the moving sprites on the stage. I have seen students create impressive projects.
