How I Use It
I run a 4 day video game summer camp every summer using scratch. The best part of scratch is that students need very little direct teaching to get going. What I typically do is force students to find answers to problems on their own and not by asking me. What I like about that process is it forces students to become the experts and not to rely on the teacher. By the end of the four days I am always amazed at what they develop.
My Take
Coding in general is a very important skill that students should all be exposed to. Scratch provides an introduction to coding that can then lead to more complex tasks. It is a tool that can be mastered and then customized, allowing students to go beyond what the program comes with and forces students to use creative thinking, and problem solving skills to create and develop their product.
