How I Use It
The website is perfect for high schoolers, especially AP juniors, to participate in or analyze argumentative writing. Someone posses a debatable issue (often times accompanied by a position statement, position paper with citations, or additional leading questions) and registered users can participate in or create discussions or debates. In debates, you take a clear stand for or against with all the cons grouped together on one side and all the pros on the other, while discussions do not require the participant to take a stance. This can be used in many ways within a classroom:
- Analyze the arguments
- Students participate in the debate
- Start a debate or discussion
What is so great about this forum is that it is a perfect model of people sounding smart while debating. The internet is filled with ridiculous and/or poorly written arguments. This really shows the proper way to disagree in a professional/academic/civilized manner. The only issues I see is that an e-mail is required if you want to participate and that at the time of writing this review there is not a large community. I think it is also a perfect place for people to publish opinion essays who are open to feedback on the topic.
