How I Use It
I mainly use this to remind students and parents of upcoming assessments or to bring project materials. However, the Remind team is constantly improving their service and adding great new features. For example, I can now select a small group of 3 or more students and send them more specific messages. I've used this feature to quickly thank students that always go above and beyond in class. I also used Remind to text our group of over 50 student mentors. Since I didn't have them all in class, this allowed me to remind them of upcoming events, of what to wear for training, and even enabled me to recruit helpers over the summer--something that would have required numerous phone calls in the past. Parents enjoy this tool because the alerts are right in their phones, so they don't have to spend time going online to check my calendar. I have also used this tool to remind students to behave well for the substitute when I was home ill for the day. Now Remind has added their "attach" feature, allowing you to send documents, photos, etc. via text links. Recently I took a photo of a "key verb list" that was on my board and simply texted it to my class as a study guide. So simple! Anything that saves educators time, makes everyone feel more connected, and makes students feel like the teacher is reaching out on their level just makes sense to me. You will not regret utilizing this great tool.
Although I maintain my class website and calendar very thoroughly, it doesn't always get viewed. Remind allows me to connect to students and parents in a format that is very direct and more likely to be viewed--text messages. I love how clean their interface is and that the service can be accessed via the web or by app. The app is well-designed and allows management of multiple courses or hours as different groups. ...and did I mention this is all FREE?! Ideal "price" for those of us in education. Remind isn't just reminders. You can send a challenge question to your class or "food for thought", you can praise your class (or a small group) for their hard work., etc., etc. Students will come in the next day, beaming, and say "YOU texted me!!!" Suddenly you are a teacher that connects to them on their level (yay texts!) and you're more relevant in their lives. I cannot stress enough how helpful this product is for busy educators/coaches/club sponsors. Being able to text your stakeholders without revealing your phone number (or theirs) is wonderful. If anyone tries to respond to a text, they're given a default message telling them to contact me at school.
