How I Use It
We used this as a grade level supplementary program for the core math program. I teach 2nd grade, which is the base level for the RM curriculum, so even my below level math students had to begin at the beginning of grade 2. At the outset, it was difficult to implement because these kids are 6-7 years old and have to learn to negotiate note-taking, transferring problems onto paper according to objective within a divided notebook. It was new to me this year as well as to my students but we learned together about how best to do such things. That said, my students made great gains in their math levels which I firmly attribute to this program.
I really like the fact that this program is student driven, allowing each student to progress at their own level and map out his/her progression on a curriculum map, visualizing current status. It also greatly promotes independent learning through student-friendly supports that even young children can properly utilize. There is also very good support provided for teachers via an assigned implementation coordinator per small groupings of schools and professional development.
