How I Use It
If there is a shortage of leveled books at your school, then Raz-Kids solves that problem. There are endless books for your students to read using it. I was able to use Raz-Kids to enhance my Daily 5 Framework in the area of Listen to Reading. The students can use iPads or computers to log in to their own page using a password, and then use a teacher assigned, individualized leveled books to listen to or read. After listening to books, they answer comprehension questions about their stories. I have 6 iPads which allows me to create a listening center using Raz-Kids. Other times, the students would use our school computer lab and everyone would spend time listening to stories or reading their assigned books and take quizzes. Students move around the site without much instructions. When they complete a book level, they are able to advance to the next reading level. The program has motivation within the site which causes the students to choose to use Raz-Kids over other choices. I highly recommend this site!
Teachers' time is very valuable and scarce at times, so that is why using Raz-Kids is worth the time to set up for your classroom. Once everything is set up, the program runs itself without much teacher time in overseeing it. In the beginning, I only used the basic part of the program without the book room part, using only teacher assigned leveled books and as I had more time to explore the opportunities for my students I then implemented them. The settings allows the teacher to differentiate and control the learning time for each student.
There is more that I can still use that I look forward to learning how to use, for example, the students can record their reading fluency or take their own running record.
Using Raz-Kids is an easy way to help my students begin using technology to enhance their learning and helps me provide for my 21st century learners!
