How I Use It
I have used Prezi only once so far to create a final project for a graduate class. However, I was already drawn to it because another professor had used it in lecture and I was intrigued by the set up and presentation of it. I would love to use it to review a work of fiction (central themes/motifs) or to kick off a new unit by educating my students about a particular author we'll be exploring. I found that the dynamic flow of Prezi keeps the audience engaged and thus is not as predictable as a traditional PowerPoint presentation.
My Take
I liked how easy it was to work with, especially considering I did not spend a lot of time meddling with the different features. It was simple to navigate from one point to the next and very easy to add images, videos, text, etc. as compared to PowerPoint where you have to create links or upload images from saved files. It's cool to me that the presenter has the option to zoom in on particular points of the presentation (i.e. if someone in the audience has a question) and has full control of how the presentation bounces around. I liked that various templates were offered, but did find it a little frustrating that I couldn't really see what a template looked like until I opened it as a new project. I will say that another benefit is that Prezi is accessed through the cloud and therefore does not need compatible software to be opened by others. It's also free (unless you choose a more advanced package)! Mostly though, I like that it is a more interactive platform than PowerPoint and has more seamless transitioning. But like PowerPoint, it is important to remember Prezi is a presentation platform which makes it an effective vehicle for introducing or wrapping up a concept, and should be used in conjunction with content and learning activities; not in place of them. Through the lens of the TPACK framework, we as educators should first decide on the content of what to teach, then the manner in which to teach it (pedgaogy), and lastly, how technology can aid in the delivery of the information.
