How I Use It
I used this product in an after-school advanced ELL class of 4th graders; if you are going to have an extra English class after school and you want kids to attend on a regular basis, you need to pull out all the stops! My students used Powtoon to create mini-senarios about school life! They used all the Powtoon features to give their presentations the right amount of pop! While I think sometimes all the choices can overwhelm them, in general they worked it out. The tutorials, support and pre-made templates were great as sometimes even I was not sure how to use certain features. If you get a teacher account you can assign quite a few students but it can be also a bit expensive if you have to pay out of pocket. Sometimes Powtoon offers free teacher licenses so it is a good idea to look for the promotions. I would recommend using Powtoon on a computer with a fast processor; the times we didn't, it took forever to load and basically took away from instructional time. I also like that students can log on their own accounts from home and work on their projects whenever they want.
My Take
I really like this as a presentation tool because it allows students to get creative. By giving them a presentation topic and scaffolding their English along the way, you can help them combine both tech skills as well as language skills. I also recommend having students evaluate each other's presentations for accuracy, organization, content and even effects. By setting a rubric beforehand highlighting specific areas, this can function as a point of reflection for the class.
