How I Use It
These videos present engineering design challenges in in a variety of fields. Biology students can watch "Bioengineering Body Parts," as they learn how technology can be used to recreate structures on other organisms. Earth science students learn about the challenges of developing an "Inflatable Moon Habitat," and "Next Generation Space Suits." In 9th grade PE, my students watch "Easy Fit Design," that explains the design process of engineering running shoes as part of a physical fitness unit. All of these videos introduce engineering practices that students can relate to - exploring current design challenges that solve real-world problems. They make a nice addition to a unit of study and provide a springboard for additional NGSS aligned engineering activities.
This is a great teaching resource for introducing engineering applications. The videos are short and engaging - approximately five minutes each - and feature actual engineers, both male and female. The different ethnicities provide my underserved students viable role-models. From a planning perspective, the videos come from various sources so the supplementary materials do not follow a predictable format. Some offer guided lessons, others supply extensions and related resources. While this is helpful for individuals or small groups to extend learning, when used with the whole class, every video and its corresponding resources needs to be evaluated for content and usefulness. This site does not provide stand-alone lessons, but offers materials that can be used to introduce or supplement an existing lesson.
