How I Use It
This online lab goes beyond the traditional weather unit. I follow the suggested sequence in the Educator Guide. After watching a brief tutorial, students identify types of clouds and then "watch" a megastorm develop by using the tools of a meteorologist; weather maps, photos, including satellite photos, and false color images. Students apply what they have learned by analyzing data to study the development of powerful storms so they can better predict their impacts. Finally, students have access to real-time data and can use the skills they have just learned to study a current storm.
I like the mix of teaching content through direct instruction and then allowing students to access data and draw conclusions on their own. The Educator Guide is well-organized with applicable NGSS standards aligned and additional NOVA resources linked to enable teachers to easily create a unit around this lab. An added bonus is the ability of students to connect to scientists who are working in the field.
