How I Use It
My students use Noodle Tools for all research projects and papers. The web-based application allows students to take notes, record bibliographic sources, sort and organize their notes and create an outline. All of these elements can be shared and are available to the teacher to provide ongoing feedback throughout the process. Teachers can comment on notecards, for example, by choosing from a list of standard comments relating to common issues, or write their own. The bibliography tool allows students to select from several bibliographic styles (MLA, Chicago, etc.), prompts them to provide the required information, and then creates the bibliography in the correct format.
My Take
I find it especially helpful to be able to access my students' notes throughout the entire research process. This allows me to check their progress with regard to both quantity and quality. I can give feedback on their notes in a timely fashion, so I'm able to offer corrections and suggestions before too much is done incorrectly. The "direct quote" and "paraphrase" sections of the digital notecard encourage students to write notes in their own words, and the "my ideas" section provides a place to record further questions, connections, etc. Lastly, using the web-based Noodle Tools means my students will never again lose their notecards.
