How I Use It
Newsela is a useful and informative product used to build literacy and reading comprehension with a type of nonfiction, informational text that's very relevant: current events.
Teachers can create a binder for each student or whole classes to assign articles individually. Most articles have quizzes.
This is a fresh way for students all in one class to all read the same topic on their OWN level so that can all discuss what they've read! Newsela is free through Google Apps, and allows for unlimited use of articles. There are about 4 published articles per day on a current event. The best thing about this tool is it allows you to take one article and differentiate it up to 5 different Lexile levels. All of your students can read the same content, just at the level just right for them. Amazing... The website has a bank of articles, and it will automatically change vocabulary and sentence structure. All the articles are sourced from top notch newspapers and newsmagazines.
I love this tool and have taught our reading department, our MS English Department, and our elementary teachers how to use it in their classrooms. I can't think of something that can make reading non-fiction more simple ... and the best part? EVERY kid can discuss the same topic because they all read the same article!
