How I Use It
I use Newsela to differentiate instruction when it comes to reading, and to create awareness of the different kinds of vocabulary levels in the same story. By selecting the different levels of complexity in the same news article, I can scaffold instruction and allow my ESL students to better understand a text in language that is not their 1st. I love the fact that the stories that are shown are current, so this makes a fantastic resource for any current events class, research that students are conducting, or even preparation for a Model United Nations simulation.
My Take
I absolutely love the idea of having different vocabulary and comprehension levels with the same news article. It fosters differentiation as it makes scaffolding easier. At the same time, kids have the opportunity to move up in their understanding by choosing more complex versions of the same text, and therefore increase their vocabulary and structure. I would appreciate of more quizzes were provided and the level of questions posed would aim more at the higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy. Also, more articles to read in the free version would be desirable
