How I Use It
National Geographic has created a robust collection of lessons, activities and supporting materials to engage students in historical and scientific topics. Each lesson plan includes an essential question, activity overview, time needed for instruction and appropriate age/grade levels. Each lesson is aligned with the Common Core, National Standards for History & Science and/or the NGSS, among others. Additionally, directions, objectives, preparation, assessment options and vocabulary lists make the site one-stop shopping for content. With over 200 available lessons and a stout search engine, teachers should be able to find elements of lessons that enrich their curricula. Depending on the independence level of the classroom, it would be possible for students to follow the lesson in small groups or even on their own.
Since these activities are predominantly intended for whole group instruction, the site makes it easy to display content on a larger screen. Most materials are also available to download. Many lessons are enriched with videos and photos from National Geographic's own collection. Find what you are looking for efficiently with several filtering options. Overall, even if teachers do not instruct a lesson verbatim, there are elements of lessons created that will undoubtedly engage even the most reluctant learner.
