How I Use It
I use MobyMax in my writing workshop classes as a means to support developing skills. I direct the students at the beginning of class to log on to MobyMax and complete the assignment listed on the board. The assignment might be: - Grammar (10 minutes) - Reading Literature (10 minutes) - Your Choice (10 minutes) While students are working on their individual lessons, I circle around to answer questions. At the end of the 10 minutes, I spend an additional few minutes on a mini-lesson based on the work of one or more of the students as a way to develop deeper understanding of the lessons they were working on. Additionally, I would assign a set period of time for work at home, or if need be, over the summer. This program is especially useful in that it individualizes lessons based on the student's relative strengths and weaknesses as determined by pretests within the program. There are a few frustrations with the program. The auditory component is super helpful, but the voices are robotic. The program would benefit from better audio. Additionally, a recent upgrade contains pop-up characters and GIFs throughout the lessons, which have become very distracting within the class. These are meant for encouragement, but more often than not, they cause of loss of concentration for the individual student who then will laugh or comment and pull others off task as well.
My Take
Overall, I think MobyMax is a great program. If you are looking for adaptive software that can support student learning while meeting individual needs, then this is it. When I use the grammar function for example, I find that within my classes, I will have students on three different grade levels in their understanding. This program provides individual support so that I can then concentrate on class lessons around grade level usage or construction of sentences and paragraphs. This program should NOT be used as a stand alone. It does not replace good instructions and personalized support. It DOES provide useful, individual lessons based on strengths and weakness in a way that is very manageable for a teacher. There is little extra work that needs to be take on by the teacher (though on has the option to create a very rich and interactive environment through MobyMax). It has an engaging platform, and the kid enjoy using it.
