How Can Teachers Use It?

The Grade 6 options from Mathalicious are an exciting collection of math lessons that teach using real-world examples. Lessons have three primary sections: Plan, Teach, and Reflect. Plan lists the objectives, recommended prerequisites, and Common Core alignment, and includes downloadable handouts. Teach includes a preview activity and a series of problems, some of which are interactive. Reflect offers an opportunity to post comments about the lesson. Grade 6 lessons are searchable by topic and by Common Core standard. While not all grade 6 standards are covered, there is at least one lesson that aligns to each Common Core topic or domain. The strongest coverage is in the Ratios and Proportions domain -- if you're new to Mathalicious, this might be the best place to start.

Do the lesson preview activity with your whole class. For the lesson problems, have students collaborate with a partner. It's probably best to pause between each problem -- come together as a class to discuss and address any questions your students might have. Some lessons have extension activities, which you can assign as homework. Or, for a more experiential alternative, use the extensions as part of a project-based learning unit.
