The Statistics and Probability offering from Mathalicious includes a set of lessons that use real-world examples. For example, in one lesson, you can have students find the probability of a win, loss, or tie during a basketball game. In another, you can have them find the probability that an overbooked airline flight will be full on takeoff. As with other Mathalicous modules, all lessons include standards alignment information and are organized into three sections: Plan, Teach, and Reflect. Objectives, prerequisite skills, standards alignment, handouts, preview activities, and word problems are included in all lessons, and all four of the Common Core domains are covered at least once. Standard S.MD.7 has the most coverage.

Spend some time reviewing the lesson guide, which makes planning a snap. The lesson preview activities and word problems are great for small-group work, or for whole-class instruction. Regardless, be sure to follow up with a whole-class discussion of kids' responses. Some lessons include extension activities, which can be great for project-based activities.
