How Can Teachers Use It?

Pearl Diver helps kids learn about rational numbers and their positions on a number line. Players are given a number line and a specific value, and they have to dive to that value in search of pearls. The number lines might include positive numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. In most cases, only some values on the number line are labeled. Kids may have to dive at a value of 1, for example, but the number line is only labeled with 0, 3, 3 1/2, 4, and 5. Supporting materials include a Teacher Guide, a Teaching Video, and a list of Common Core coverage.

Use the game as an exploratory tool when starting a unit about rational numbers -- go ahead and turn kids loose before you teach the concept. If necessary, get your kids interested by showing them the Teaching Video first. You can have them play the game individually or with a partner -- encourage them to do their best, explore, and learn as they play. Afterward, have kids discuss their experiences as a class. Once you've finished the unit, give kids a chance to play again to help reinforce the concepts.
