How I Use It
Over the course of the summer a couple colleges and I hosted Math Camp for the local middles school and elementary students. During the week long camp we asked teachers to utilize one video and one game from Math Snacks in order to encourage students to explore those concepts in depth. As a culminating experience, teachers were tasked with creating an over arching activity that bridged the two modules and allowed students to show their understanding and grasp of the concepts.
The camp turned out to be a huge success!
Over the course of the week we were pleased to 35 students gaining a better understanding of coordinate grids, number lines, ratios, and scale factors. Through such activities as Coordinate Grid Basketball, Scaled Catapult Model Building, and Custom Rocket Launch (to measure the height of flight) students displayed a fundamental understanding of all concepts used in the camp while still showing a great deal of involvement in the learning process. From students discussing the concepts of ratios during lunch to how glad they were they had property scaled utensils, every day was a reminder that these kids were picking up a lesson and internalizing it.
These weren't kids who came to camp to learn about math and happened to have fun, these were kids that came to camp to have fun and happened to learn, and that is what makes Math Snacks so effective!
