How Can Teachers Use It?

LearnZillion's 5th Grade Math offering consists of video lessons and supporting materials aligned to a good number of fifth grade Common Core math standards. Overall, coverage is extensive, and many of the lessons build on Grade 4 skills. For example, kids learn to divide by a one-digit divisor in Grade 4. In the Grade 5 module, they learn to divide by a two-digit divisor. Kids also begin to divide with decimals, building on their understanding of place value.

For fifth-graders, the lessons here would work well if viewed independently, immediately following in-class instruction. Teachers can choose a lesson and watch the coach's commentary; these review prerequisites, common misconceptions, and teaching tips. After kids learn about the topic through classroom instruction, have them watch the video lesson on their own. Assuming one is available, assign students the guided practice immediately following the lesson. Last, come together as a whole class to watch the lesson and guided practice again, pausing to address any questions.
