How Can Teachers Use It?

LearnZillion's 3rd Grade Math lessons do an excellent job of covering some key standards, so kids' progression from second to third grade is a smooth one. For example, in Grade 2, kids learn about place values up through thousands, how to add and subtract within 100, and how to use models to add and subtract within 1,000. In the Grade 3 module, kids build on these skills before moving on -- they'll also begin to multiply and divide by interpreting whole number products and quotients of whole numbers.

Lessons are organized by grade-level standards, so you can easily find a lesson that's relevant to your instruction. Once you've found one, view the coach's comments first to prepare: They review the standards covered in the lesson, important prerequisite skills, and common mistakes. The commentaries also provide some helpful teaching tips. Next, have kids view the video lesson in small groups as an introduction to a skill, and then come together as a class to discuss the concepts. Finally, have kids complete the guided practice alone or in pairs. Be sure to have students pause the video to write their answers on a sheet of paper, and then resume the video to see the solutions.
