  • Badges and energy points can be motivational and validating, even for older users.
  • The Mastery Challenges are short quizzes covering mixed topics – the aim is to ensure mastery, not just memorization.

How Can Teachers Use It?

If your students have in-class device access, devote the first 10 minutes of every class to independent review time on these foundational math concepts. During this time, while students work toward Mission mastery, you can work one-on-one with struggling students (easily identified via your teacher dashboard) or help kids who need support on new material. Alternately, you could assign a certain number of homework minutes each week. As their "coach," you'll be able to monitor students' time and progress. Students could also hop onto the site whenever they've got a few extra class minutes.

Do you predict that your students will struggle with a particular topic -- say, fractions? Devote a day, or even a solid week of class time, to review just the topics relevant to your instruction. You could even assign these parts of the Mission in advance. To help build excitement, challenge kids to earn energy points or badges to meet goals. Also, think of these foundational lessons when designing academic study periods or seminars, or when organizing after-school homework clubs.
