How I Use It
I used this product along with more traditional instruction. I completed the teacher-led basic mini lesson on surface area, then had students complete different levels of practice problems on the same topic in Khan Academy. Students who needed the lesson reviewed were able to view the videos provided on the site or access the hints for solving a problem step by step. Students were able to work at their own pace on the practice problems and move on to more advanced practice problems if they finished their work early. Especially for advanced learners and students on grade level, they did well with the asynchronous learning after my mini lesson, even the ELLs since the videos had subtitles. Struggling learners had more trouble with the practice problems and reviewing the steps, but did well when placed in small group instruction for students struggling with the same topic.
My Take
For differentiating with students, especially if doing review, this site is great because students do not have to wait for one another to move on to another topic or sub-topic. I used it especially for review for the state exam and students loved getting more clarification and practice on topics they struggled with. Students quickly understood that they had to solve problems carefully as they would not be able to move onto another topic if they did not get the required 5 in a row correct for the topic they were reviewing at that time. If the videos were more personable - showing an actual teacher and/or more colorful diagrams, then I think the video clips might intrigue students more. I found students going through the hints for the step by step process to solve the problems if they had an idea of how to solve the problems as opposed to watching the video clips.
