Khan Academy's Missions are flexible enough to be used in a number of ways, and the 6th Grade Mission can work well to help reinforce foundational skills as kids embark in their middle school math journeys. If using a flipped-class model, it's great if students can try out some of the content at home as a preview before you begin working on that unit in class. Using the site's Common Core map, teachers can assign sections of the 6th Grade Mission to precede coverage of key lessons and concepts in class. Practice activities and videos are included for most standards, but not all, so be sure to check.
Alternatively, after completing an in-class unit, teachers might want to assign specific parts of the 6th Grade Mission to students who need extra practice in a given area. For example, if, after finishing a unit, a few students are still having trouble differentiating between mean, median, and mode, embarking on that part of the mission might help reinforce these concepts. Students could also be assigned specific tutorials in this area, if all they need is a simple brush-up. Used remedially, this mission provides yet another objective tool to check students' grade-level progress toward mastering the concepts necessary for success in seventh and eighth grade.
