How I Use It
I used this product as a tool to reinforce learning objectives that were covered in my 6th grade class. Khan Academy has a massive collection of videos that provide mini-lessons/tutorials on specific academic concepts. The one thing that really works well is that students have the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward the videos. This is great because students can use Khan Academy to learn at their own pace. When I used Khan Academy, I would assign a video for students to watch as well as one specific problem for them to complete. This problem would not only be a computational problem, but also one where students would have to provide a written response about how to solve the problem. This was a great way for me to assess student knowledge of a specific concept.
The one thing that does not work, is the ease of finding specific videos. There is a search bar, as well as different categories for all videos. However, I believe that it is best for teachers to provide the link/directions to the specific video that students should review.
Overall, this is a great teaching/learning tool! I really like how it allows students to complete lessons at their own pace. I believe that this could best serve the teacher by providing extra support or reinforcement of ideas and concepts that are covered in the classroom.
Additionally, I believe that this tool is something that students can/should use on their own to facilitate deeper understanding of academic concepts. Essentially, Khan Academy is a personal tutor for students. It is a great tool for students to use for extra support during the school year, as well as during the summer. I highly recommend Khan Academy to all teachers and students.
