How I Use It
I have used it to help students get an introduction to computer programming. The lessons are engaging and interactive. I have helped teachers in my school set up classes so they can coach students. This allows for differentiation in the classroom. Students who may have trouble on a skill can re-watch videos and complete extra practice to catch up. Students who have already mastered a concept can continue to a new concept. Students are motivated by energy points they earn from completing activities. In addition, since there are videos covering so many topics, most students can find something of interest to learn about!
Khan Academy has a variety of online lessons from the core subjects to computer programming. It is well organized by subject and level. A neat feature is that teachers can sign up a class and "coach" students through the material. That allows students to proceed at their own pace through the lessons while the classroom teacher can see how they are doing. Many lessons have a short assessment at the end. For example, in the math sections students are given practice problems and new levels are assigned based on whether students answer correctly or not. Each lesson has ratings and comments to help you decide whether you want to use it with students or not.
