How I Use It
I use it at least twice a week in my math enrichment class to give students a chance to practices on the content. It engaged more students than giving them worksheets. Students can work on different area they struggles with, which is more efficient and effective than everyone working on the same worksheet. Once you set up a routine with the students, the students will be ready to start working when they have the computer. I also can go around and help students individually both on previous content, and math from their current math class. I can look through the students to see what they answered, correctly and incorrectly as well. It shows what content they are struggling with, so that I can reinforce in that area to the class. Some of my students got in to it and even work on it at home when they have free time.
My Take
Khan Academy is a great learning tool for the students to use in class and outside of the classroom. It can be access anywhere with internet. Each student has their own account. Students can choose from a variety of Math content at their level to have extra practices and learn ahead. This year, Khan Academy had created a mission game type of coaching for Math in each grade. When the students sign in on their dashboard, they will see a list of topics they can work on, as well as topics that you recommended will appear on the top. The list will be different for each kid at their level. The students can earn badges and points, which motivates them to beat their peers in their class and to continue to work on more exercises. When they are stuck with a problem, they can watch the video for help or take a hint, which helps with self learning, and gives the teacher time to work with students individually as well. Teacher is able to monitor and track what the students did in the class in real time and afterward, to make sure students are all on task as well. It gives the students a chance to go back through past materials and more practices on the current content.
