How I Use It
I provide a links to the specific Khan Academy lessons/practice in the weekly learning plan for students. We use Khan Academy as a preview to the adopted curriculum and as support or review for students desiring reinforcement. Students also use Khan Academy independently during free choice time in class, at the after-school program, and even at home. Most students watch content videos and then practice. Some students prefer to work with the practice problems first and refer to the videos as they need support. A correct answer is required for the program to advance. This has prompted students to collaborate with peers or seek teacher help which has been powerful learning.
My Take
Khan Academy is an amazing learning tool. I see students self monitor their learning progress with the check marks that are accumulated at the top of the practice screens for correct answers. This is a powerful incentive for students to seek help from peers as they are learning. Also, students are highly motived to continue learning and practicing in order to earn badges and points. The "coach" reports have allowed me to support students with appropriate whole class or small group instruction. I have been able to identify when advanced students struggle with issues that may have been missed in paper/pencil environment. We just began using the grade level missions and will have to comment on this in the future.
