How I Use It
I used this website as a differentiation tool for my students. They had individual log ins, and would go and complete exercises for standards that we were currently working on as an extension/reinforcement of skills. What didn't work, was that my students would become easily frustrated if they didn't "pass" that standard. They would keep bouncing around to other standards, rather than taking the time/using the resources present to work through that standard.
My favorite part of the extension/reinforcement aspect, was that I could have students go back to the 4th grade curriculum to the pre-requisite standards to practice, and could extend those to the 6th grade standards to push them. My students would compete within the class with who had the most "energy points" and who could unlock/evolve their avatars the quickest. My second favorite piece about Khan Academy, was that it would not allow students to complete the standard unless they've mastered it. They were presented with videos, mini-lesson, and practice questions before a small assessment. I also use Khan Academy as a tool to help parents with understanding the work that we are doing. The approaches that they take in their videos closely align to the way I am teaching their son in class. If I am not readily available to walk them through a problem or homework question, I send them the Khan Academy link, along with the standard.
