How I Use It
I would utilize IWitness within primarily history courses in high school. Students that I had review the website were really impressed with the autobiographical accounts of historical events. It is one thing to teach a student about a historical concept and quite another to have them actually interacting with the history and listening to people who were there. IWitness definitely puts a face to history and encourages a deeper understanding of our past. What I really like about the activities and modules is that they encourage student collaboration and review towards the end. This would be a resource I would use either individually or in small groups to review events and provide deeper understanding.
Overall, I wish that I had known more about IWitness when I was actually in the classroom. However, I am definitely sharing it with teachers I work with so that their students can utilize it. The depth of knowledge that this provides students is beyond compare. As we progress through time, we are losing many eyewitnesses to historical events. This resource provides a way of maintaining those resources and allowing students to actually interact with the past in a concrete way.
