How I Use It
In regular government classes I add a game to each unit and allow students to play the game in class as a reteach of what they have learned. I then encourage them to re-play the game as a part of studying for each unit's exam. I have used the games as part of my AP Government summer assignment. The games work well because students need directions and support with the ideas and concepts within the games and the well written instructions bridge the gap. Students enter class in the fall with a good frame of reference gained from each game.
My Take
icivics games are ready-to-use! All teachers have to do is provide students with the URL. I like the fact students can replay the games and the games are free. It raises student engagement and draws their attention to specific parts of the political process that students often miss when reading textbooks. Students love the fact that they determine their own fate based upon the choices they make. Games reward students who have done their homework or background activities and help those with weak foundations learn step-by-step.
