How I Use It
I use this product in my teaching every single day. I use the sites to post google documents that I want my students to be able to see, forms that I want my students to be able to fill out, and links I want my students to have access to. I use the websites that I have as a tool to share with my families what is going on in my classroom. It is so easy to post a link to the parents on my homework listing that allows them access to the directions that I have provided students in case they need additional information at home. If you would like to see how I use my google site in action please take a look at the following link: https://sites.google.com/a/merton.k12.wi.us/mrs-iwanski-s-5th-grade-class/
The other way that I have used google sites is as a portfolio mechanism for my students. I have given my students templates for them to create their portfolios on in google sites. They do the majority of their work in google docs/presentations/spreadsheets and are easily able to link those documents into their websites. They have uploaded pictures, graphics, and scripts thatallow them to showcase the work that they have done throughout the year. They can share these sites with their parents, teachers, and classmates and allow those people the opportunity to comment on what they see. This was a fantastic way for my 6th graders to end their second year with me and serve as a summation of everything that they have done and learned.
Google sites works amazingly as a teaching tool. It allows me to quickly share all kinds of google documents, presentations, spreadsheets and forms with my students in one location. I am not the most tech savvy person in the world but the way that google has their sites set up is incredibly easy. I haven't had any problems organizing the information in a way that is logical for both my students and my student's families. I liked that google allows me to also include other internet resources into one place. When I find a video that I want my students to watch I can load them directly onto the google site for my students to immediately access. I have not explored going off of template very much. In my initial attempts I had thought I could design without the use of a template and have more freedom. That was not as easy as I thought it would be. I have found great success using a template and have not had any difficulty. If you are a beginner at website builder or google I would definitely recommend using the templates and doing some exploration as to what the different pages that you can add can allow you to do.
