How I Use It
I use Google Drive every single day; I've migrated my information from my hard drive to Google Drive, which allows me to access my documents, photos, and other information from any device that has web access. In addition to that stellar use, I use Drive in three basic ways in my role as an educator and Technology Integration Specialist: 1. Providing information: With the easy-to-build Google Sites, I've created an ever-growing series of classroom websites that provide my students assignment calendars, web resources, shared notes, and more. The sharing power of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides allows me to instantly and paperless-ly distribute classroom materials. 2. Collaboration: I can set up documents to be shared collaboratively between myself and other educators, between myself and students, and more. My students can create collaborative notes during class, my teachers can look in on my lesson plans, and I can provide parents with all documents in class. 3. Creation: My students (and fellow teachers) can create and publish documents (Docs), presentations (Slides), spreadsheets (Sheets), surveys (Forms), and much much more (via Chrome web extensions and applications.) Examples: My World Lit students created a collaborative presentation that they published on my classroom website showing what they learned about Dante's Inferno. My ELL students annotate Huck Finn. The document has notes from students from five different countries and spans six years of student notes. My students with learning differences benefit from the fact that I can look in on their documents as they work and provide them with helpful comments and critiques. My Take
Google Drive may seem overwhelming at first, but that's only because it has exponential power in the classroom. I love using it to create and publish lessons, to share professional development tools, and most of all to shift my classroom into a creative and collaborative mecca for my students. Drive can be used as a personal cloud-based tool for creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and much much more. The fact that it's cloud-based means your info follows you across platforms and from device to device. Take the dive and offer it to your students, and you open a whole new world of collaboration, creation, and publication that provides students with the tools necessary to become strong digital citizens.
