How I Use It
I started using Glogster after a workshop that I attended at Columbia University. I was a second grade ICT teacher and I used it for a small enrichment group for publishing writing their biographies. They were excited to try it and to work with technology to publish their writing. I had one of the 5 students I worked with really connect with Glogster. She has a very high level of comprehension and works diligently at home and in school to incorporate technology. All of the students published their writing using different media sources. It was a little difficult for most of the group to work on their glogs and all but 1 continued to work on it at home. In 2nd grade, they do need the support of an adult to assist because the site does get glitchy and was slow. However, this year I am using it with a 3rd grade small group and it is working much better for all. It isn't as slow and one of the students was in my group last year, so they are not having any difficulties editing their glog.
My Take
Glogster is a great resource to show the students a way to incorporate a variety of media tools in one presentation. I love that it is on one page because as the students present, they are not distracted by transitioning slides. It is easy to follow and creates an engaging presentation, especially for young students. They tend to lose their train of thought easily and they just look to their glog and they are reminded of their thoughts. It is an anchor chart that they create digitally and I love that they can have this as a publishing choice when creating and designing their drafted writing pieces. I just wish it was free for teachers. Subscriptions add up and become expensive. That would be the only thing that held me back from using it in the future.
