How I Use It
Because of my frustration in feeling I wasn't meeting the needs of all my grade 5 students, I changed my classroom from a whole group teaching environment to a guided math structure including differentiated small group teaching as well as out of group purposeful practice activities including vocabulary, fluency, and word problem practice. Once I learned about Front Row, it became my technology workstation since it provides individualized instruction without me needing to do anything! Not only does it allow for instruction students on topics but it also encourages collaboration by suggesting other students in the classroom that can help with a problem that a student is struggling with since the program knows who is past that level. Further, the teacher reports allowed me to group students by mixed ability as well as by ability as well as letting me know exactly which skill those students need more practice with. Front Row literally saved me hours of work so that I could spend my time concentrating on how I could teach my students the concepts. In my role as math specialist now, I see Front Row used in all classrooms K-5 and witness the students' engagement every day. I also teach math methods classes to preservice teachers and have them finish the domains as well to ensure their mastery of the foundational concepts.
My Take
I truly consider Front Row the nirvana of math apps because of its ease in setting up the classroom, individualized instruction complete with teaching videos which meets the needs of every learner whether they are a struggling learner or an advanced one, encouragement of collaboration, engagement of the students, and the powerful teacher tools that allow teachers to focus on the most important responsibility - teaching the students!
