How I Use It
Formative is a fast and efficient way to assess students in a 1:1 or BYOD environment. Assessments can include typed response, multiple choice, true/false or show your work. The show your work option allows students to respond by drawing or uploading pictures. You can give them a background image such as graph paper so they can use that when they answer. They can also add links to videos and images. Existing PDFs and Google Docs can be used to create assessments. Easy sharing with students or teachers via link or codes and teachers can decide who has access to the assessments. Live results view means you can grade and provide feedback while students are working. A lot of flexibility is allowed in grading. Sliding scale grading allows you to drag the slider as you evaluate open responses. You can show all responses for a particular question, hide student names and then discuss responses as a class. It also allows a summary view of results. You can also assign to particular groups if an assessment is not for the entire class. New features continue to be added to this feature rich tool. There are even some pre-made generic assessments to get you started quickly in addition to plenty of helpful tutorial videos.
Formative has the complete package for getting a pulse on your students' understanding. The flexibility allowed in questions types and grading makes this one of the best web based tools. The site is easy to use, allowing easy sign up through your existing Google account or other accounts. It also allows you to use your existing content to create your assessments including PDFs, Google Docs, and Docx files. In order to use this site, you will need to make sure the network you are using can support the site since using this for live feedback requires a good bit of Internet bandwidth.
